She got me 4 of the jars and one small clear apothecary jar for my bathroom. I am so excited.

Pillow love.

Homegoods. This place seriously rocks my socks.

I headed there on a whim today... (boy, will I miss being so close to Homegoods when I start my new job...more on that later.) and there were more goodies than ever!!! I picked up some lovely little items for my Studio...like this little beauty...(well almost exactly like this one...mine is actually white with a slightly larger mirror in the middle.)

...only I got mine from Homegoods for $34 as opposed to where Young House Love got it from Marshall's for $39! I nearly wet myself when I saw it...I have been stalking Homegoods for one since I first saw it on YHL's site around this time last year!

I had my lucky find above and a lovely green vintage locker basket (perfect for wittle newborn photoshoots) that looks almost exactly like this...

...sure you can find one online but only to the tune of $40!!! I got mine for $12! :) Boo-to-the-YAAAHHH!

Now I can take adorable photos like this...

Now, if I could just get my hands on a vintage scale...ANYWHO...the Pillows...that's why you're reading right?!!?!

So...there were some gorgeous pillows...and since I am on the hunt for some perfect throw pillows to replace the geometrical-boring-tan-pillows that came with our couch...I darted straight to that section. They were gorgeous. I found white ruffle ones...(sorry again for the cell phone pics)

And beautiful teal ones (these would match my bed perfectly!)

I really liked these as a possible for the couch...but they were a little on the bigger side and only had a few dots of green to match the living room...the stems were grey, flowers were black and the dots in the center of the flowers were a lime green.

I couldn't bring myself to pay $14.99 for the white ruffle pillows...even though I really wanted two for the couches...so I carried on and headed towards the bedding.

Then I saw it.

Amy Butler.

Did you hear me?

I said Amy *stinkin* BUTLER.

It was the most gorgeous comforter I had seen in a long time...AND it matched my spare room. I nearly wet myself...again.

Here's a better picture...

AHHHHHH...oh, and btw's...it's 100% Organic Cotton...300 thread count. I may resume my regularly scheduled naps back in the spare room again! :)

So...like I said...Homegoods. Rocks. My. Socks.

I will be heading back to pick up my new Amy Butler comforter later this week. *sigh* Can a girl get any happier??

OH..yes she can...and she has two reasons why...stay tuned!

Coupons! Coupons! Coupons!

So I did a little research this morning...trying to find out where to snatch up the best deals, etc.

So here's the nitty gritty for those of you in my area...you know who you are.

Here are the list of stores in our area and their coupon policies...(sorry, but I kept the list down to only the stores I shop at, so Giant is not on the list...I have never liked their prices.)

Food Lion
Accepts manufacturer and internet coupons.
Does NOT double/triple

Shoppers
Accepts manufacturer and internet coupons.
Doubles up to $.99
On occasion, they triple, up to $1.50 I think.
Internet coupons accepted up to $7.00
Free internet coupons not accepted, unless it's BOGO.

Super Fresh
Accepts only manufacturer coupons
NO internet coupons
Does NOT double/triple

So...for me...Shoppers wins. Hands down. Not that it's a surprise. So now, onto planning my coupons and spending. Unfortunately for me one of my favorite sites, SouthernSavers.com doesn't offer the AD's for Shoppers on their site along with all the bonus information they provide (more on that in another post)...so I have to do a little work on my own.

So, let's pretend  you are sitting down with me at the dining room table to plan my shopping trip. Here's what I would do. First thing, I make a list of what is needed, and then what's wanted, then extras. This is so I won't over shop and/or buy anything we don't really need. Then, I head over to Shoppersfood.com and I hit up their 'online coupon' area. I select my desired coupons and even print doubles of some good ones. (Now, bear in mind many online couponers will keep track of how many you have printed. I believe you can print two to three before you will see a note that says "limit reached" next to the coupon.) For this trip I clipped 12 coupons, totaling savings of $12.55, I am already excited! I also have my already collected coupons stocked up and ready.

Next, I check the weekly specials...for even more change in my pocket! After selecting your store you can check out the weekly in-store specials or the circular. So I check those out and match up with coupons where possible. For example, I am adding these to my shopping trip:

Digiorno 2/$10 - Coupon for $2 off = 2 for $8 or $4 each
Kraft Cheese Singles 2/$4 - 2 Coupons for $1 off = 2 for $2 or $1.00 each
Tyson Chicken Strips (lower price) $6.99 - Coupon for $1.00 off = $5.99
Sargento Cheeses (lower price) $2.79 - Coupon for $.50 off two/doubled = $2.29 each
Johnsonville Italian Sausage 2/$6 - Coupon for $1.00 off = $5.00 or $2.50 each

So with just those I am saving $7.00...it's a start, that's for sure.

Now the plan for this trip to the store is to just buy what is needed, no stocking up.

So skip forward a couple hours...after some research and planning, collecting and cutting coupons...the shopping is done and I save $13.80!!! That was 14% of my total. I am quite proud of myself...I love learning how to coupon and I love saving money!

So get out there, cut coupons, do a little planning and SAVE! Share some of your best couponing stories and how you save money shopping!

I SHALL Coupon!!

I will...
cut coupons.
save money.
and save BIG.

I will.

Here's how I'm doing it...for now at least.

I have started by cutting coupons, duh. I recently purchased a weekend only subscription to The Sun newspaper (Thank you Groupon. If you aren't using them you SHOULD!), I got my first one last weekend. I cut out what we eat, drink or use only. I categorized them.

I will do this for at least another two-three weeks, to build up a complete system of coupons.

Then, I will start  implementing them into my shopping plan...according to my bi-weekly meal plan.

I will take only the coupons that I plan to use. I don't plan to stockpile for more than a 3 month supply of anything. If my store is doubling or tripling coupons, then that's a bonus, and I will try and match up to those shopping dates. I will also take advantage of the deals at CVS, Rite-Aid and Walgreens, like toiletries, etc.

This is my plan.

I am excited to build up to bigger and better savings each time. Eventually, I plan to join CouponSense.com. So, far it seems to be the best plan available.

Until then, here are my other online resources:
Coupons: Red Plum
Coupons: Smart Source
Coupons.com
Money Saving Mom
Hip 2 Save
Mojo Savings
Frugal Coupon Living
Passionate Penny Pincher
Southern Savers

So...how do you save? Do you cut coupons? Share your secrets...it's not that fun if your the only one saving money! ;)

We've been meal planning...

Yep. It's true.

About a month ago, while working on our budget I realized that in one month we had spent nearly ALL of one of my paychecks on eating out...eating out?!?! And I am good cook! This has to stop!

So...meal planning it is.

Because after all, I am a planner.

I need organization.

I need a shopping list.

I need to know what I am cooking before I get home.

And...let's be honest...Husby needs to know what he is having for dinner...because with our track record, I walk into the living room and say "Spaghetti for dinner..." and he will almost always reply with, "Ohhh ok...I was hoping for...enter any of our normal lame classics here..."

Sorry babe, but it's so true.

So...meal planning it is.

We have been at it since, August 23rd and we are doing GREAT! The goal was to incorporate some new recipes from our new book, the "Savvy Shopper's Cookbook", and some Clean Eating recipes from the "Clean Eating Magazine" that our BFF's let us borrow...(Oh you can check out her reviews of some of the recipes on her blog here...) and of course...there are the classics. Every family has the classics...ours are...Spaghetti, Steak and Baked Potatoes, BBQ Chicken and Homemade Mac & Cheese, Stuffed Green Peppers, and the list goes on!

OK...anywho...since we started, here's what we have been eating:
8/23/10 - Alfredo Chicken Pasta - which was delicious, even though I didn't add the carrots in called for...I don't enjoy carrots, and Hubsy wanted them in there for color...but uhh no.
8/25/10 - Biscuit Cheeseburger Casserole - it was good...however the "add the biscuits to the top and back" part...well it left the bottom 1/3 of the biscuit a little doughy and thus Husby was a little grossed out. We just peeled that part off, but I almost lost him on this meal :P
8/26/10 - Sandwiches (part of the Classics... :) heehee)
8/28/10 - Grilled Fiesta Chicken Sandwiches - These were yummy, but still a little bland...we most certainly had no "party in the mouth" feelings :P
8/29/10 - Spaghetti - For lunch, at church...a fundraiser. - Well, I bought my ticket, but ended up having Sushi with the sister while Husby went home and slept!
8/30/10 - Skillet Lasagna - Ok, this...was...delicious! Seriously It was SO yummy. And we had a TON leftover. I am freezing it, so hopefully it will make another great meal very soon!
8/31/10 - Sweet and Sour Chicken
9/1/10 - Pulled Pork Sandwiches
9/3/10 - Chicken Spaghetti

I am sure if you are paying attention, you will note some days were missing...that just means either I had a meeting where dinner was provided, or we were somewhere else where dinner was provided. So there was no need for an organized home meal.

Anywho...here's how it works.
I will sit down on the scheduled (every two weeks) Saturday or Sunday and plan the next two weeks. That goes for checking the calendar, to see what's going on, and then picking out recipes and getting the grocery list in order. Then before that first day of scheduled cooking begins, I will get the shopping done and we are all prepared and ready to go for two weeks!

Now, we aren't locked in to the cooking schedule by any means, so if we want something else that night, we can swap some of the two week meals around or hit up some of the other food i the house. And we aren't locking out any notion that there may be nights that I don't feel like cooking, or those nights when we really just want some Chick-fil-a; but we are no longer those people who eat out all the time and waste our money on food that probably is not the best for us anyhow!!

I am really excited about where this will take us...and if I am planning correctly, we will be spending less than HALF of what we were spending on eating out...that right there people...that's enough reason for me!!

So, do you meal plan? Who does most of the cooking in your house? How do you save money?

Dollar Store Jeans?

No joke.

Dollar General sells jeans...and from what I am hearing...they are pretty decent.

$12 gets you a pair. I may have to try this out. I have some sort of allergy, hatred, refusal of paying more than $30 for jeans. Which is probably why I have to buy them every 3 or so years. Well that and the fact that my butt grows enormous then shrinks based upon my diet changes shape every few years.

Anywho. For $12. I am willing to give them a shot.

My friend TT posted about them on Facebook today, see here.

Hmmm...nice. $12 jeans...some of you are squirming in your seat because you would never by $12 jeans, much less jeans from DOLLAR GENERAL...well I am not above cheap clothes that cover my body and a little thrifty shopping...so I will be checking it out.

Although finding my size...will probably be my downfall. Gosh, when did I become such a negative ninny?! :/

Almost got dupped...

I ordered my camera...it should be here on Saturday.

I'm kinda wettin' myself a little over this...

No, seriously.
I am terribly excited!
I have been doing research. Watching videos. Stalking photographers. Looking at pictures.

I am so ready.

But let me tell you about the process of buying the camera...and in the meantime, maybe I can share a little about what I have learned from online shopping over the years.

So first things first, search, search and search. There is almost always a better price out there...but be careful. Sometimes the best deal, isn't really the best deal. Do your due diligence.

You may remember my birthday wish list...I found my camera on sale here, here and here. The first link, was at $599 when I originally posted that blog. Then when I went back to do more price searching I found the price at $574. Of course I nearly fell off my chair...what SAVINGS! Then I looked at the other pages and the prices were different from what they were originally too.

Red Flag #1.

So I did more searching...PriceGrabber, Google Shopping, etc...all the prices I was finding there ranged from $669 and up.

Red Flag #2.

Now, I know what you are thinking...Why did you keep searching? Grab that pretty expensive camera for cheap while you can!!

And I know...I almost did.

Red Flag #3.

The more I thought about the GREAT SAVINGS the more my belly twisted, and my mind raced...along with my heart. It really was a case of too good to be true.

So I took the next step...I googled the companies with the great sale prices; and what I found was downright upsetting...

Bad reviews.
Scams.
Doing business under multiple names.
No business addresses.
No delivery on products ordered.
Receiving the wrong item.

Red Flag #4, #5, #6...let's just say my red flag "buzzer" was going off...!

Just lots of downright dirty, shady, hinky business stuff. So I sat. I waited. There's no rush, I thought to myself. Sure, I want my camera now...but not enough to get scammed, or to get the wrong item, to go through all that hassle. I did more reading...

I found it said on many blogs and forums, that if you are saving more than 65% on a fairly new item...chances are it's a scam of sorts. Rarely do new and somewhat expensive items go on sale that deep. Like I mentioned above...if it's too good to be true it probably isn't.

So I went back to a reputable searching source and began searching. I looked at the lowest prices, within the reasonably safe, yet still saving range and I even headed over to eBay. At least I know with eBay I have buyer protection from scams. I found a pretty decent deal and I was able to make an offer as well...I did and saved $10 more dollars.

Normally, and here's a bonus just for you, when I shop online at consumer stores (places like eBay don't count) I always go to Retail Me Not to look for coupon codes. Many, many times I get lucky. I saved $20 on my laptop skin from Schtickers.com and every time Husby and I order Papa Johns, we save more money by grabbing a coupon code from Retail Me Not. I have saved at many other places as well, there have only been a handful of places that had nothing to offer.

So anywho...I got my camera...still with $100+ savings on the retail price and with decent shipping costs to boot and I narrowly avoided a scammy pileup and some heartache!!

The moral of the story is...take your time. Never be in a rush to buy online. Do your research, check the background and reviews on the company. There are many other people who write reviews for that very reason. Learn from other's mistakes...and if a company does a great job...write a good review too! And remember, the lowest prices may seem good...but may equal alot of annoyances in the process.

Good luck!

Tell me about some of your online shopping successes! Where do you go for great deals??

Time to rant...

Sorry...I may come across as a raving lunatic...but I am aggravated.

All I would like to do is refinance our home loan to a lower rate. Is that a lot to ask? Sure the rate isn't high...in fact it is average if not the norm. We can pay our mortgage payment with no issue. We do it on time, every month. Always have; but who wouldn't want to pay less for a mortgage payment...even if it's just a couple hundred a month.

...and for all that good behavior...we get nothing.

No lower rate.
No lower payment.
Nada.
Zip.
Zilch.

stupid.

It seems that we fall into some category of people, who do what they should; paying mortgage on time; have good credit scores, have steady jobs, etc, etc, etc...so that means we are just fine and they have no options for us.

Just stay right where you are and enjoy no financial benefit for doing RIGHT and sticking with your financial responsibilities.

It's just dumb.

Don't get me wrong, I am so grateful that we aren't struggling; that God has taken care of us and has given us wisdom to stay financially healthy, we live within our means and God takes care of us; we are grateful that we don't NEED help from the Government...

...but a little slice of the pie...that wouldn't be too much to ask for. Not in my opinion.

Ugh.

Rant over.

...taxes...ehhh?

April writing...

So I spent about an hour and half tonight working on our taxes. We were only waiting on one piece of paper...basically small and non-important....and it was reasonably painless and stress-free. (except for a minor headache with the software installation haha!!!) Let's just say I am not happy with talking to someone who barely speaks English when it comes to my tax software...ehhh.

I am SUPER happy with the outcome and our tax refund. We will be able to pay off one of our credit cards and buy a new front door and still have some leftover...maybe my new camera?? (wink, wink Husby!) maybe some for the crown moulding in the living and dining rooms?? maybe setting the rest aside for our potential trip to Montana this year??

We shall see.

Are you ready for tax season?

10 weeks till Christmas...

April writing...

I know what your saying...WHAAAAA???? Already?? But not me...yep...no sweat here.

This will be our 3rd year not celebrating Christmas the 'normal' way.

Going into debt crazy buying gifts for everyone and their momma...when it ain't even THEIR birthday! I mean truly...it is the birth of Jesus Christ. We should be doing good in his name...you know, since we can't send Jesus a pair of slippers with puppies on them up to heaven for him to open on his birthday.

So...there has been so much LESS stress.

Granted, we still buy gifts for the little ones in our life...or a special little something for friends and family if we see it and it makes us think of them.

But no more are the times of saying, we can afford $75 for Uncle Johnny and $45 for Aunt Sarah and we can spend $200 on each other...and blah blah blah.

It's quite simple...
Cory's side of the family...the couples (three of us; his parents, Cory and I and Jo and Tamm) we draw names and get that persons stocking. We spend the year filling it with little things that the person NEEDS or things we find that just scream THEIR names. And there's even a spending limit, that we stick pretty close to.
My side of the family...a family trip to do something together...One year it was Medieval Times...last year it was to the Movies on Christmas Day to see "Marley and Me."
The kiddos...they get gifts of course...but we have even limited our amounts...as it has been shown that spoiling kids with such loads and loads of gifts tends to spur greed and ungratefulness in the years to come.
Friends...we use the rule...only if they can USE it or it's just too PERFECT to pass up.

I believe that this year, Cory and I are going super easy on us...and buying a gift for US...we have wanted a laptop...well basically since we sent ours smashing to the ground, shattering the screen broke ours. :( So we will do that this year, but ONLY if we find a GREAT deal!

With all these changes...can I tell ya...it's just been SUCH a huge weight off. There's no added debt, no added stress and more time for FAMILY and less time devoted to wrapping and shopping with all the crazies out there!!

Just focusing on family, friends and making wonderful memories!!

Half the time I can remember what I got for whom and got from whom...but I remember the fun times exchanging gag gifts at Friends houses and making cookies with family and rejoicing in the birth of our Savior with my church family with no worries of having to run out after church and get those final needed gifts.

For those of you who are thinking...this is such a FOREIGN concept...here are a few simple ideas to make Christmas easier and less stressful. Take them as baby steps.

taken from SimpleMom.net

It’s not too early to start Christmas shopping. In fact, some of you might already be done shopping for the holidays. Starting earlier means spending less money, finding gifts people really want or need, and seriously cutting the stress during the holiday height.

Christmas is not about the gifts, and it’s much easier to avoid the “I wants” and the feeling of needing more and more if you don’t go shopping much during the season. There’s something about the stores that tempts well-meaning parents into feeling guilty for not getting the latest toy for their child, or enticing the innocent husband into blowing the budget on his wife.

You don’t necessarily need to go on a single-minded mission to the stores, but keep Christmas gifts in the back of your head when you’re already there. If you can finish your list before the stores start playing holiday music, then you’ve done a great job.

Here are a few tips to make Christmas gift shopping less stressful.

1. Make a List

Don’t ever go gift shopping without a list. Ever, ever, ever. You will more than likely buy more than you intended. List the people for whom you’re buying, jot down a few gift ideas next to their name, and cross them off when their gift is purchased.

Keep this list with you at all times. That way, it’s readily available when an unexpected gift idea pops into your head.

2. Set Limits on People

This is a touchy subject. At what point do you stop buying presents for your extended family? Or is it an eternal tradition in your clan?

Because Christmas isn’t about the gifts, at some point families need to just put a stop to the stuff. It’s definitely easier said than done in some families, because there inevitably will be a sister-in-law or a dad who doesn’t want to stop the gift exchange.

If your family is like this, are you up for being the one to call a hiatus on the tradition? If so, here are a few ideas for broaching the subject tactfully:

Do it gradually.

Maybe instead of stopping a gift exchange all together, suggest a reasonable cost limit for this year. After a few years of this, perhaps the adults might be more open to ending completely.

Exchange names.

Suggest drawing names over Thanksgiving, so that each person only needs to buy for one other person. This doesn’t always help that much, however. On one side of our family’s case, if my husband and I each drew a name, we’d be buying two gifts instead of four. A little better, for sure, but we’re still spending.

Go homemade.

A homemade gift created specifically for someone is more treasurable than a big box store purchase. We’ll share homemade gift ideas in this series soon, but for now, think sewing, an mp3 playlist, or a task like babysitting.

3. Set Limits on Quantity

Decide in advance how many gifts to buy each person in your family, and stick with it. In our family, the children receive three from Mom and Dad because Jesus received three. Well, that’s debatable, and it doesn’t really matter that much, but it’s our way of curbing the overflow under the tree. And it works for our kids, because it’s all they’ve ever known.

For the adults, the amount changes from year to year, but we do mutually agree in advance. Last year, my husband and I got each other one larger gift each (iPods). This year, we’re going with one small gift per person, probably a book or a DVD. We’re going on a family vacation in November, so we decided that’s the bulk of our gift to each other.

4. Shop Online

When you shop online, you avoid the crowds, it’s easier to stick within your budget (no enticing last-minute purchases made at the register), and you have endless options. I love supporting cottage industries and the handmade community, so my preference is most definitely online. Plus, a one-stop shipping option means no waiting in line at the post office.

My favorite places to shop are Etsy and Amazon. I know Amazon isn’t a small business by any means, but it sure is handy — they’ve got everything, and they’ve got a good return policy. Plus, shipping if often free when you spend more than $25. And I could spend hours browsing at Etsy — I love the fact that each gift bought is unique, thoughtfully crafted, and quite often made from quality, non-toxic materials.

(April's sidenote - when shopping online, always remember to check for added savings at retailmenot.com...you could save on your order or possible get free shipping!)

-------------------

So there...it's that easy!!! How you make changes this Holiday season?!
Make it more about tradition and family then debt and presents!

Real life...

April writing...

I LOVE it when real life gets in the way of my plans. I think is SUPER GREAT...like TOTALLY AWESOME.

Can you tell I am trying to convince myself?

Ughhhh. It's crazy annoying.
I had this summer mapped out perfectly.
Like I had a chart and everything.
I should know by now it never works out perfectly.
I realize this seems to be a very pessimistic outlook on things...and no, this isn't Cory writing...it is me...April.

I'm just frustrated.

May I vent please?

I sat down in the middle of June and planned out our bills, our spending and our vacation. I'm a planner, if you haven't gathered that by now. I wrote out which bills we would pay with which paycheck, when we would set aside extra money and what we were allocating that money to.

I had already put off allocating extra money to pay off our car insurance renewal in one lump sum instead of monthly payments...that wasn't the plan...I was supposed to have been saving since our last lump payment but I thought that allocating that money in other places was better planning. My mistake.

Then I hit someone.

And now we are looking at spending another $500...because my insurance claim with the other driver's insurance was denied. (don't EVEN get me started on that part)

So now...I have to make up the slightly over $400 payment for our insurance renewal, and an additional $500 for our deductible. (Unless the other insurance company comes through for us an reconsiders the denial of our claim...fingers crossed right?!) Plus I have to gather up an extra $285 for one of Cory's golf tournaments. I'm not mad about that, he deserves his fun...I'm just frustrated that it's another thing.

Both of us had a three pay month this summer...we were going to have LOTS of extra money this summer...and not extra money to play around with...this was money for bills and paying of debt, then we spent it...rather quickly...without really meaning to.

Real life.
Boo on you.

I'm not whining or complaining...just kinda...ehhhh. We are fine...the money is there or will be. We could really be much worse off and NOT have that money at all. I realize this. It's just. Frustrating.

So now...my pretty little chart I made...showing what money we would allocate where and when...well it's been marked up...things have been moved around. And as I sit here and watch our money fly away...

I can't help but be a little bummed. You know what they say, "The best laid plans of mice and men, often go astray."

I had a dream

April writing...

Last night...I dreamt that the government bought out Wells Fargo and paid off all debt associated with the company in order to stimulate the economy. Thus paying off our mortgage.

So we took our mtg payment and then paid off other debt with it...within months we were debt free.

Hmmm.

Come on Obama...I think it's a GREAT idea :)

Money, Money, Money...

April writing...

I hate the need for money.

I'm gonna be a bit vulnerable here...(and I may ramble heehee)

Cory and I have done well...we aren't rich by any means, but we handle our finances well for the most part. Then we have tight weeks and this is one of those weeks. Partially due to a minor flub-up on my part...but oh well. So, it's probably why the topic of finances are on my mind.

We have seen God work through our finances to help others, we have been taught great lessons in regards to our finances as well. For example...in years past we weren't always consistent in paying tithes. In 2008 we challenged ourselves to pay tithes continually throughout the entire year, and we did. Funny thing was we got back in taxes almost to the penny what we paid in tithes. Chance? Coincidental? God? <----- I'll take that option. We have months were we can enjoy our extra money...by going out to eat, going out to the movies, buying clothes, buying stuff for the house, etc. Sure, we could take every extra penny and add it to the "Reduce the Eslick Debt" fund...but we feel that it is a little easier at times to enjoy some extra pennies rather than pushing it all towards debt. We have slowly been picking away at debt...i.e., the car is almost paid off...we are down to only two credit cards. We still have a mortgage and a HELOC (home equity line of credit)...but we are considering those to be just part of life and we will pick away or combine those two at some point.

We know that while there are times when things are tight, God is still blessing us in ways that we may not even notice at first. We know that there are plenty of ways we could cut back if we needed to. Cable, internet, cell phones, groceries, even energy and power usage, and home improvement projects. Then there is always eating out and entertainment. We know that if push came to shove...we could and would make some changes. We have seen how money can impact relationships in a bad way and in a positive way.

It does that with everything right? I mean, admit it. When there is money in the bank, we are all less stressed, less on edge, less worried. However when there isn't so much money...we worry, we argue, we blame even.

I think it is important for us to have Faith. To believe and firmly accept that God will take care of us. That doesn't mean we won't have tough times...gosh, our world is having tough times now, just because we have God on our side does not make us immune to that. We have to work together, especially those of us in relationships.

I know for Cory and I...communication is the key. We have to be open and honest and even make each other aware of our concerns and our suggestions. In our relationship I mainly do the bills. That's my job that I take very seriously, I am methodical and organized. Although when I am doing them, there are many times that I consult with Cory. After all, if I am the CFO of our household, then he most certainly is the President, and what company has a President that keeps his nose out of the finances? I make him aware of our status...for example...it's basically, "Babe, this week we are tight," or "this week we are good," or "dress up baby, we are going OUT this week!" haha. We each know what that means, and if not...we ask in order to clarify.

I think it's important for us all to learn from one another. Each of us have had different financial scenarios creep up in our lives. Just think of how much we can teach and learn from each other! So I guess I will just take a moment to list some of the lessons we have learned, some suggestions and some things to watch out for...from our little box of life's financial lessons. (I say this NOT because I think we have it all figured out, or because I feel we are all set...it's because I know that I have learned from others, and if something I do can help someone...why would I not say it?!)

Lesson's we've learned:
  • Always keep an open line of financial communication between you and your significant other (SO). There is NO harm in over communication. Especially in regards to planning and allocating your finances.
  • Remember to be patient, at first you with both have different ways of doing things, you together have to find your own flow. (Cory is a spender, I am saver...it took us a while.)
  • If you mess up, pick yourself up, and move on. If your SO messes up, again, be patient. Don't fly off the handle. Half the time they have probably already beaten themselves up enough.
Suggestions:
  • Centralize and Organize. Whether it's you or your SO that handles the bills...it should all be centralized and organized. Each person in the relationship should be aware of how the process of paying bills, filing, etc works.
  • Make short term and long term goals, both financially and with anything that relates to finances. For example, your debt-payoff plan, your home improvement plans, etc. Everything on your list should be given adequate priority that is agreed upon by both parties.
  • Make changes if need be. Do it now. Don't think about it...don't think you can do things differently without changes. If cut backs need to be made...do it. The biggest enemy of someone trying to change their financial outlook is procrastination.
  • Open the mail as soon as you get it...put bills in due date order and file...remember centralize and organize.
  • Sign up for home banking. This was the greatest thing we ever did. It makes things SO much easier...and most banking systems have great filing systems built right in. They are also accessible from any location with internet access! Call me crazy, but I access our account at least every other day to stay aware of where we are. There won't be any surprises for me!
  • Take responsibility. Each person in your relationship has a job to do in relation to the finances...whether it is spending it wisely, paying the bills, whatever. Know your job and do it well.
Watch out for:
  • Your downfalls. We all have them. Is it spending? Eating out? Too many groceries? Jumping ahead on your priority list? Whatever it is, identify and watch out. Be accountable to your SO and be honest.
  • The un-avoidable. Car trouble? Health care costs? Birthday presents? They all creep up on us sometimes and we aren't ready for them! Plan ahead. That means put money into savings if you have a bum car or just have an emergency or present fund available to pull from if need be.
  • The blame game. It never helps...ever. Just don't do it. For any reason.
At the end of the day...we NEED money to service...I don't know any of you who are living in at tree reading this blog with free floating wi-fi. So figure out your stance on it, plan and get organized. Work together as a team and don't worry.

What are your lessons learned, suggestions and things to watch out for?! Remember we can help each other!
