No, we don't have the crazies...

Husby and I are seeing a Counselor.

I know what your thinking...but you're incorrect...

Nothings wrong.

We are fine.

Seriously.

We just LOVE seeing a Counselor. We have always thought of counseling as kind of preventative maintenance for our Marriage. Kind of like how you get your oil changed in your car, get your tires rotated, etc. It's a good idea to do the same with your Marriage on in your single life.

We would honestly recommend counseling to everyone...single or married.

Enter Jane. She's our Counselor. We love her long time. She's awesome. For reals.

She suits us so perfectly...it's really uncanny at times.

We went to her about 4 years ago for some preventative maintenance for our 3rd/4th year of marriage...and we loved it. It's amazing to see how much goes unnoticed in a marriage. How much you just gloss over. It's really interesting to have a completely unbiased person look at you and say...Well, have you thought about this? or that?

It's...beyond helpful. We went in thinking we had our communication down to a fine art, only to be shown otherwise. There were plenty of things we just never brought up to the other person or things that we just pushed aside that should have been dealt with.

It was refreshing and rejuvenating and challenging.

Then...we stopped going.

And after 4 years we sat down and realize that we couldn't quite figure out why we stopped going. Who knows...we probably got busy...found something else to spend the money on, etc. So we said...let's go back.

And here we are.

It's been over a month...and our pattern works a little like this...

Couple Session
April Session
Husby Session
Couple Session
April Session
Husby Session...

You get the picture?

I know that people probably must think we are nuts for how much we LOVE counseling; but to those people I would just ask this very question...what's stopping you?

I know most people are afraid. Afraid of what it will uncover. Afraid of how it will stretch them. But don't be.

Husby and I firmly agree that everyone should go to counseling at least for a season of every year. Especially while preparing for a marriage (engagement), after being married, while single...as parents and those trying to become parents...while looking for a new job...when your retiring, etc. It really is...that...helpful.

Jane makes us think...about the easy stuff...about the hard stuff...all of it. She reads our body language, those silent clues that tell her so much more than we even think we are saying. Sometimes the things she says...wow...I mean...we are like "how'd you get in my head?"

We would be naive to think that over the past 7 1/2 years of marriage...having a Husby on midnights hasn't effected me, or being a Police Officer and seeing what he sees, just doesn't effect Husby. Or battling infertility for over 4 years just doesn't impact us. PPSSHHHHHH...whatever. It SO does. There are just no if, ands or buts about it.

Truth is we are all going through something. Did you know that even a good long streak of GOOD THINGS can impact you in ways you wouldn't imagine?

*sigh* I'll step down from my soapbox now...but hear me on this...If you haven't ever, or aren't currently in counseling...look into it.

Really look into it.

For those that attend church with us...the counseling center there is amazing. That's where we met Jane. They work on a sliding scale...so don't think you are walking into paying hundreds per hour...not even close. We told her what we could afford and that's what we pay. Not a cent more.

Do it. Grab your spouse and go to counseling; if your spouse won't go with you...go alone...the benefits are so worth it. Get off your single butt and go to counseling; I know it sounds scary...but you will learn so much about yourself!

Do it.

What's going on?

So remember about a week or so ago I said I was about to get stupid busy? Well maybe I didn't say it like that...but I am realizing that's the truth of it now! :P

So...allow me to show you what's been up via pictures...

We finally painted our Master Bedroom and got new lovely, luxurious, soft, almost bed-like carpet in all the bedrooms...

We got all gussied up and went to our first Gala! :P So proud of Husby!

I dressed up like a cloud.... :)

And then we have all the photoshoots...

Sweet little baby boys...

Adorable families...

Oh and sweet little baby girls...

and the Newly Engaged...

and Momma's and Daughters...

So yes, for reals...I have been busy. But I am lovin' every...single...minute of it.

Sprinkled in there I have started walking again, we have started up a small group with some great friends, I am trying to refinish and reupholster a chair and a bench, and I've been hanging out with some great ladies in 'Aprons', Husby and I are enjoying seeing a counselor again...(more on that in the next post) and spending as much time as I can with Husby.

It's been a wild ride that isn't slowing anytime soon...

This week, I see Jane (our counselor) tonight, then we have Small Group...tomorrow I have a photoshoot with my Nieces and Nephew, then Wednesday is my night off :), Thursday is packing and laundry and Friday-Sunday we head out to River Valley Ranch for our 3rd Annual High School Fall Retreat with the Verbies...which I am terribly excited about! Gosh...then don't even get me started on NEXT week...here's a hint for the craziness to ensue...that weekend of 19th-20th...I have 4 photoshoots. :P

But God is blessing us big time and we are just sitting back and soaking it all in! :)

Should "fatties" get a room?

Are you kidding me?

What I am about to  paste into this post will most likely anger you, as it did me. I heard this article read on The Talk; a new daytime talk show (which I am loving so far). Anywho...it had me seeing red and spittin' fire...as did Sharon Osborne and the rest of the ladies on the show.

This article was written by a Maura Kelly for Marie Claire magazine, it was titled "Should 'fatties' get a room? (Even on tv?)" yeah I know...already disgusting huh? Here's what she had to say...(I will include the entire post originally seen here, then bold the parts that really stood out as disgustingly horrendous. Then I will include her apology, written a few days later.)

The other day, my editor asked me, "Do you really think people feel uncomfortable when they see overweight people making out on television?"

Because I can be kind of clueless — I'm not much of a TV person — I had no idea what she was talking about, so she steered me to this CNN article, about the CBS sitcom Mike & Molly.

As CNN explains, "the show centers around a couple who meet at an Overeaters Anonymous group [and] has drawn complaints for its abundance of fat jokes [as well as] cries from some viewers who aren't comfortable watching intimacy between two plus-sized actors."

My initial response was: Hmm, being overweight is one thing — those people are downright obese! And while I think our country's obsession with physical perfection is unhealthy, I also think it's at least equally crazy, albeit in the other direction, to be implicitly promoting obesity! Yes, anorexia is sick, but at least some slim models are simply naturally skinny. No one who is as fat as Mike and Molly can be healthy. And obesity is costing our country far more in terms of all the related health problems we are paying for, by way of our insurance, than any other health problem, even cancer.

So anyway, yes, I think I'd be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other ... because I'd be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything. To be brutally honest, even in real life, I find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room — just like I'd find it distressing if I saw a very drunk person stumbling across a bar or a heroine addict slumping in a chair.

Now, don't go getting the wrong impression: I have a few friends who could be called plump. I'm not some size-ist jerk. And I also know how tough it can be for truly heavy people to psych themselves up for the long process of slimming down. (For instance, the overweight maintenance guy at my gym has talked to me a little bit about how it seems worthless for him to even try working out, because he's been heavy for as long as he can remember.)
But ... I think obesity is something that most people have a ton of control over. It's something they can change, if only they put their minds to it.

(I'm happy to give you some nutrition and fitness suggestions if you need them — but long story short, eat more fresh and unprocessed foods, read labels and avoid foods with any kind of processed sweetener in them whether it's cane sugar or high fructose corn syrup, increase the amount of fiber you're getting, get some kind of exercise for 30 minutes at least five times a week, and do everything you can to stand up more — even while using your computer — and walk more. I admit that there's plenty that makes slimming down tough, but YOU CAN DO IT! Trust me. It will take some time, but you'll also feel so good, physically and emotionally. A nutritionist or personal trainer will help — and if you can't afford one, visit your local YMCA for some advice.)

Then again, I guess these characters are in Overeaters Anonymous. So ... points for trying?
Then again, I tend to think most television shows are a kind of junk food for the mind and body. The boob tube gives us an excuse to turn off both our brains and our bodies and probably does a helluva lot to contribute to the obesity problem, over all. So ... I don't know.
What do you guys think? Fat people making out on TV — are you cool with it? Do you think I'm being an insensitive jerk?

Her apology:

UPDATE: I would really like to apologize for the insensitive things I've said in this post. Believe it or not, I never wanted anyone to feel bullied or ashamed after reading this, and I sorely regret that it upset people so much. A lot of what I said was unnecessary. It wasn't productive, either.

I know a lot of people truly struggle to lose weight — for medical and psychological reasons — and that many people have an incredibly difficult time getting to a healthy size. I feel for those people and I'm truly sorry I added to the unhappiness and pain they feel with my post.

I would like to reiterate that I think it's great to have people of all shapes and healthy sizes represented in magazines (as, it bears mentioning here, they are in Marie Claire) and on TV shows — and that in my post, I was talking about a TV show that features people who are not simply a little overweight, but appear to be morbidly obese. (Morbid obesity is defined as 100 percent more than their ideal weight.)  And for whatever it's worth, I feel just as uncomfortable when I see an anorexic person as I do when I see someone who is morbidly obese, because I assume people suffering from eating disorders on either end of the spectrum are doing damage to their bodies, and that they are unhappy. But perhaps I shouldn’t be so quick to judge based on superficial observations.

To that point (and on a more personal level), a few commenters and one of my friends mentioned that my extreme reaction might have grown out of my own body issues, my history as an anorexic, and my life-long obsession with being thin. As I mentioned in the ongoing dialogue we’ve been carrying on in the comments section, I think that's an accurate insight.

People have accused me of being a bully in my post. I never intended to be that — it's actually the very last thing I want to be, as a writer or a person. But I know that I came off that way, and I really cannot apologize enough to the people whom I upset.

Now, believe me...I have gotten looks from people too. I am not exactly playin' for the skinny team, so some may take this as a biased opinion...but I feel like what she said, especially the bolded part...was not only completely insensitive and mean, but also very small minded and ignorant...but I know she isn't alone in that type of thinking. And that's sad. Many commenters even spoke on how they feel that the apology was forced and very surface. Others felt her mentioning her own body image issues was a low blow stating that she can't blame her issues on how she treats other people...and I tend to agree. I feel that if you have body issues, then you should be one of the few that understand where others with body issues, be it obesity or anorexia are going through. So those words should have never left her mouth...or have been typed in this case.

Personally, I am also a bit appalled that Marie Claire would let this type of talk go in their magazine...with bullying so rampant these days it amazes me that talk like this would earn someone a paycheck.

So...Do you have a problem with overweight people kissing in public, or on TV? What are your thoughts on the article?

Roadside find...our next Trash to Pleasure...

My apologies for the semi-crappy cell phonepics...I was too excited to wait to get my camera!!

LOOKIE what Husby found on the side of the road for me!!!

I cannot WAIT to refinish it for my Craft Room/Studio!!!

I have no clue what I will do yet...I am sure it will involve some painting and decoupaging!!! :)

But isn't it grand?!

What a great find Husby!!! And it is HEAVY as all get-out too!

Can't wait...keep your eyes peeled for our next installment of "Trash to Pleasure" where we tackle this beauty!!

a little Gala fun...

Husby is involved with the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. as an Ambassador and a Liason between for his County. Last night we were invited to attend the Groundbreaking and Gala. It was a great chance to get all gussied up and meet lots of new people!

I loved the dressing up part!! :)

Me and my oh-so-handsome Husby...

They had some great artifacts to showcase. Many more of them will be showcased in the Museum that is now being built.

This call says "To: Daddy, wish you still could play." It was one of the artifacts left at the Memorial Wall during Police Week.

This old patrol car was actually used in the movie "Runaway" with Dean Cain.

The Gala location was gorgeous...this was only about half of it!!

They had statues all the way up by the ceiling...we almost missed them.
and there was a huge fountain in the center...

I am so proud of all the hard work Husby has done for this organization! It shows his passion for the loss of fellow Officers and making sure that each one of their stories are heard.

We even got to meet Vincent D'Onofrio from Law & Order: Criminal Intent!!

How cool?!?!

Husby got to be a part of a video made by A&E Television, and shown at the Gala...awesome!

All in all, it was a great evening! And we meet some GREAT passionate people!! :)
